[personal profile] sterling posting in [community profile] writers
We're all relatively new to DW, and that means we're likely going to meet a lot of new people. But, where to start? How can we break the ice and get to know each other?

Perhaps a quick friending "meme" would be just the thing. Copy and paste the below as a reply to this thread, and let us know what kind of writer you are. Answers can be as vague or as specific as you'd like.

Reading

- Your favorite genre/s: I'm a sucker for a good bit of romance, and I like comedy stuff as well. I wouldn't say no to a bit of fantasy stuff either, and I have a soft spot for things based off historical Japan.
- Your favorite author/s: Right now probably Lian Hearn - I haven't been reading nearly as much as I'd like now that it's the exam period though D:
- Your favorite book/s: Memoirs of a Geisha, Tales Of The Otori, and many many more.
- Your favorite character/s: From Tales Of The Otori probably Muto Kenji, Muto Shizuka and Kubo Makoto
- Least favorite book/s: I don't really have one - if I don't like the start of a book, I tend to not finish it. I can't really judge a book if I haven't finished it though.
- Least favorite characters: Same goes here - I don't really have one.
- Recommended reading: Those above, I guess.

Writing

- What do you write: A lot of fanfiction, really. And far too many essays for school.
- Your favorite genre/s to write: Since I write a lot of fanfiction, AU seems to be a favourite - I end up writing it a lot anyway. A lot of it tends to be romance stuff as well, because I'm a sucker for it,
- Do you write fanfiction? Yes, like I said. I mostly write in the J-pop/JE fandom, specifically Arashi, although I have written other groups before (those are all locked now, though).
- Do you write original fiction? Not really - I'll probably give it a go one day though.
- Current project: A multichapter Arashi high school AU, because everyone has to have one XD; Also, something for a contest which is currently in the editing stages. I can't forget the sequel to a fic I wrote before either, although that's gone on the backburner for a little while.
- An area you'd like to improve in: I don't think I can single out anything specific. I just want to improve in general.
- An accomplishment you're proud of: Actually managing to write a 16,000 word fic and a prequel. As well as the already mentioned sequel which is still in the works. I tend to get bored with writing things when they get long, so for me that's been a pretty big achievement.

Other

- Hobbies: piano/keyboard/flute, writing (obviously), reading, singing, graphics - quite a lot really. I could go on for quite a while XD;
- What's in your journal? Mostly RL stuff and fangirling over Arashi. Pretty much everything on my DW is just a copy of my livejournal.
- Why did you move to DW? I haven't, really. I'm definitely still mostly based over at LJ. DW is more of a backup of my journal, and me being a sheep, because everyone's getting an account.
- Favorite energy drink? I can't say I really have one. I would say tea or something, but it actually tends to make me more sleepy than anything else.
- Anything else? Not really?

Reading

- Your favorite genre/s: Fantasy, but I'll read anything if it's good.
- Your favorite author/s: See above. ;)
- Your favorite book/s: The Clan of the Cave Bear (but the sequels aren't nearly as amazing), Once Upon a Marigold (adorable, with a great style), His Dark Materials series (simply spellbinding!)
- Your favorite character/s: Oh my! I honestly think that's an impossible question for me.
- Least favorite book/s: I wouldn't be able to list them, and I never bother to finish them and quickly forget they exist. I'm currently reading Pillars of the Earth and it's pretty boring...
- Least favorite characters: Again, I couldn't list them. All characters have their good and bad points, assuming they're written well!
- Recommended reading: I'll point at the list of my favorites, then direct you to my goodreads.com account. :)

Writing

- What do you write: (ex: fiction, poems, songs, etc.) Fiction mostly, but I've been known to dabble in non-fiction and poetry.
- Your favorite genre/s to write: Fantasy, for sure.
- Do you write fanfiction? (if yes, what fandom?) I have in the past (Final Fantasy VI, mostly), but it's always been sparse. I prefer to work with my own characters.
- Do you write original fiction? Definitely!
- Current project: I'm working on a story about a naive elven girl who lives alone in the forest. She falls in love with a vampire and he turns her life upside-down. It's definitely in the planning stages at the moment, though.
- An area you'd like to improve in: Dialogue, for sure. I've been told mine doesn't suck, but it sounds stiff to me.
- An accomplishment you're proud of: Description. When I have a clear image in my mind I can descibe it in sparkling detail.

Other

- Hobbies: Ragnarok Online has taken over my life, but I like to play with photography, sing, and draw.
- What's in your journal? Not much at the moment, but if I have a lot of friends I bet I'll be inspired to post more often. ;)
- Why did you move to DW? I'm not sure I have yet. I'm harmonious @ LJ, and I'm a little reluctant to leave my legacy behind...
- Favorite energy drink? Gross!
- Anything else? Ask and you shall receive!

Reading

- Your favorite genre/s: Fantasy, paranormal, young adult, regency romance
- Your favorite author/s: Maria V. Snyder, Anne McCaffrey, Shan Sa, Sandra Heath, Georgette Heyer, Sharon Shinn, Linnea Sinclair, Ilona Andrews, Sharon Ashwood
- Your favorite book/s: The Rowan (Anne McCaffrey), Poison Study (Maria V. Snyder), Ravenous (Sharon Ashwood), East (Edith Pattou), An Accidental Goddess (Linnea Sinclair), Enchanting the Lady (Kathryn Kennedy)
- Your favorite character/s: Yelena (Poison Study), Gillie (An Accidental Goddess), Sorcha (Daughter of the Forest), Pigeon (the Pigeon books by Mo Williems--what I think that little critter is hilarious fun)
- Least favorite book/s: Horror (Stephen King/John Saul horror), non-fiction (for the most part), Return to the Secret Garden by Susan Moody
- Least favorite characters: Bella Swan types--average characters who are then made extraordinary for no other reason then breathing. Harry Potter...I just never liked him.
- Recommended reading: Poison Study, Daughter of the Forest, Little House in Big Woods, The Girl Who Played Go, The Rowan series by Anne McCaffrey

Writing

- What do you write: Fiction with a slight need to sometimes write depressing poetry that I share with myself and a candle when done.
- Your favorite genre/s to write: Fantasy mostly. Some paranormal, but not as much.
- Do you write fanfiction? I used to--Sailor Moon, Young Justice, Inu-Yasha, The Tribe--haven't in about...7 years? 8?
- Do you write original fiction?Yep.
- Current project:There's 3--the neverending quest to finish my Al'sea epic, another piece about Dreamers and another one about an assassin that uses Shadow Images.
- An area you'd like to improve in: Practically every? Honestly I have issues with grammar, consistency and well motivation. I write--but I also get easily distracted.
- An accomplishment you're proud of: Al'sea has finally reached 5,000 words and I don't want to change a single one! This is a big thing for me because i've been working on her for the last 11 years of my life on and off, but every time I come back to it I get a new idea and rework it and I've been very frustrated by my lack of progress. But I have finally decided that the first 5,000 words (or so, give or take a few) are not going to be changed under any circumstances.

Other

- Hobbies: Reading, roller blading (very badly), video games (Persona, Kingdom Hearts, .hack), organizing (not even lying), baking/cooking (somewhat well)
- What's in your journal? My DW account is basically going to be focused on a pet project of mine around a character named Annalise. At least until my friends all move here permanently.
- Why did you move to DW? I haven't moved completely here. My book review blog is still blogspot, my personal journal is still LJ, but DW is my writing haven because I feel a better vibe from here.
- Favorite energy drink? Vitamin water. Though i've cut back and drink mostly only Tea, water and the occasional cranberry juice.
- Anything else? Nope!

Writing

- What do you write: Original fiction ad drabbles here and there when I get bored.
- Your favorite genre/s to write: Fantasy, YA and all that jazz.
- Do you write fanfiction? Nope, I was never really attracted to it.
- Do you write original fiction? I try to. XD
- Current project: I have an idea about a urban fantasy story, thoguh it still needs developing. A LOT.
- An area you'd like to improve in: Everything, really. I don't like my writing at all.

Other

Reading

- Your favorite genre/s: cyberpunk, young adult, literature classics, fantasy, archaeological fiction (if any such genre exists), historical fiction, children's literary classics, psychological thrillers, surrealistic, expressionistic, impressionistic,
- Your favorite author/s: many many... Enid Blyton, Dean Koontz, Neil Gaiman, Franz Kafka, Philip Pullman, Tolkien, Jean M. Auel, JK. Rowling, Jostein Gaarder, and many more whose names I don't remember
- Your favorite book/s: His Dark Materials, Earth's Children, Dracula, Frankenstein, The Christmas Mystery, Neuromancer, Seize The Night+its predecessor, etc.
- Your favorite character/s: I'm not sure. I like Pippin from LOTR a lot, although my all time favourite might have to be Kári from Fóstursonurinn, by Árni Ólafsson.
- Least favorite book/s: the vampire books by Anne Rice (save for Pandora). Can't say Twilight for I will not degrade myself to read those books.
- Least favorite characters: Lestat. His self-importance and blah blah blah plus Anne Rice's inability to shut up and get on with the plot made me so annoyed I didn't get further than chapter one.
- Recommended reading: His Dark Materials. I also recommend any and all Franz Kafka and Neil Gaiman's Stardust. I also recommend Dracula, not for the entire vampire thing but for the interesting views the book offers on the role of the female in a (then) contemporary society. If you're annoyed by Jonathan Harker, don't give up, he's not the only POV and won't stay for long.

Writing

- What do you write: I used to write poems, but I've stopped that now. Sometimes I write songs. Most of the time I write fiction; short stories and longer.
- Your favorite genre/s to write: I'm not aware of what genre I write... adult/young adult fiction, I assume.
- Do you write fanfiction? yes, in the finndom. (RPS) my OTP is Jack(Private Line)/Christus (ex-Negative). Most often abbreviated Japa/Kris. a photo of them together.
- Do you write original fiction? yes. :)
- Current project: Passion Colours Everything. It started out as fan-fiction but I don't think I'll keep it that way. Gay university professor who's deliberately shutting out the world ends up having a fling with a student. sounds more cheesy than it is. It's about character and psychological development.
- An area you'd like to improve in: Overall. I can't really think of an area I definitely know I need improvement in, but I'll take critique where it's given and work on it.
- An accomplishment you're proud of: when I finally finished That Kind of Dirty. It was 8 months in the making ~end result 23k words, 14 chapters. ♥

Other

- Hobbies: photography, reading books, writing, music, going to gigs, spend time with my friends, walk our dogs, play with the children, photoshop, web design, drawing, painting... many things.
- What's in your journal? Two entries. xD There's not a lot and at the moment I'm more or less synchronising it with my LJ.
- Why did you move to DW? I haven't. I'm not leaving LJ and I'm keeping DW alongside it.
- Favorite energy drink? I hatehatehate energy drinks.
- Anything else? I don't think so. Ask. :)

- Your favorite genre/s to write: Anything that falls under the broad umbrella of SF, from space opera to magic realism to horror to steampunk.
- Do you write fanfiction? Sometimes. I've written Doctor Who, Marvel Comics, Star Trek, Metal Gear Solid and Abarat fanfic, all very short and self-contained.
- Do you write original fiction? A lot of it.
- Current project: Oh, man! Don't get me started. I have about three novels going, and two novellas.

- Your favorite book/s: LOTR, Hamlet, Five Children and It, Joseph and his Brothers, The Three Musketeers, The Brothers Karamazov, Brokeback Mountain, far too many more to list.
- Your favorite character/s: Far, far too many to list!
- Least favorite book/s: I've mostly repressed the memory of books I hated, but there was an archeology text so badly written that it turned me completely off a subject that had interested me since I could formulate thought.
- Least favorite character: Uriah Heep. He's brilliantly written, but he never ceases to creep me out.
- Recommended reading: The Bible, but with a really fresh eye and one's religious beliefs left very firmly out of the room. Anything by Charles Dickens, because everything he tackled is either still with us or is coming around again.

Writing

- Your favorite genre/s to write: Sci-fi, fantasy, historical stuff.
- Do you write fanfiction? Torchwood, LOTR, Star Trek TOS, Alien Nation, many others.
- Do you write original fiction? I did when I was a kid, and I'm about to again.
- Current project: Tardis BigBang piece that's due in June.

- Your favorite genre/s: For fiction: Mid-century realism (and mid-century stuff in general, actually), and cynical recent stuff with a magical realism streak (like Vonnegut and Tom Robbins) For Poetry: Modernism, British Romanticism
- Your favorite author/s: Richard Yates, Haruki Murakami, Alexander Pushkin, and Yasunari Kawabata (so tough to choose just one, haha).
- Your favorite book/s: "Siddhartha" by Herman Hesse
- Your favorite character/s: Psmith from various Wodehouse novels, the narrator from Eugene Onegin
- Least favorite book/s: Perks of Being a Wallflow by Stephen Chisdfjifsky, mainly because it is so overrated.
- Least favorite characters: Holden Caulfield
- Recommended reading: Any story by Saki, Christina Rosetti's poetry, "Naomi" by Junichiro Tanizaki

Writing

- What do you write: Moooostly poetry. I want to learn to write better fiction, too, but for some reason that doesn't stick with me.
- Your favorite genre/s to write: Lately I've been trying to work on forms. Adapting sonnets to actually be appropriate in English (3-4-3 is a lie, 5-7-5 is an attrocity), and trying to write sonnets to exercise my brain a bit.
- Do you write fanfiction? Sometimes I write Pokemon stuff for fun.
- Do you write original fiction? Sometimes, but not so good at it.
- Current project: This whole 3-poems-a-week thing I am working on right now.
- An area you'd like to improve in: Plotting out stories. Exposition and everything is fine, and my characters are believable enough but I never know... what is going to happen.
- An accomplishment you're proud of: Once I got paid $10 to write a script for a student film. That's... you know, real professional and all.

Other

- Hobbies: Bike-riding, drawing, napping, and watching documentaries on the boobtube.
- What's in your journal? Nothing yet! I just made it a couple of days ago, but I am probably going to post 75% irl bullshit and 25% writing.
- Why did you move to DW? It seemed friendlier than livejournal, where I was, which is pretty cliquey sometimes, and full of dumbosaurus rexes.
- Favorite energy drink? Bull urine.
- Anything else? LESSSSS US BE FRIENDS.

Reading

- Your favorite genre/s: Probably fantasy and urban-fantasy, sometimes slice of life stuff
- Your favorite author/s: Scott Westerfeld, Isobell Carmody, Neil Gaiman, Jennifer Fallon, David Eddings, Mary E Pearson, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Guy Gavriel Kay
- Your favorite book/s: Peeps by Scott Westerfeld, Obernewtyn Series by Isobelle Carmody, American Gods by Neil Gaiman, Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden, Belgariad Series by David Eddings, His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Nieffenegger, Bridget Jones by Helen Fielding, The Great Book of Amber by Roger Zelzany, Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley, The Uglies Series by Scott Westerfeld, Midnighters series by Scott Westerfeld, Ysabel by Guy Gavriel Kay
- Your favorite character/s: Elspeth Gordie from the Obernewtyn Chronicles
- Least favorite book/s: Twilight by Stephanie Meyers
- Least favorite characters: Isabella Swan from same book
- Recommended reading: Scott Westerfeld. He has a rather interesting look at some aspects of society.

Writing

- What do you write: Fiction
- Your favorite genre/s to write: I don't limit to any specific genres but I do often find myself writing urban-fantasy, fantasy, science fiction, contemporary and speculative with the occassional horror/crime thrown in for good measure
- Do you write fanfiction? Sometimes but it's rare and the characters have to be really really inspiring
- Do you write original fiction? Mostly, yes. Specifically in the YA genre.
- Current project: A YA novel tentively titled, "I am Jane". Although the title will probably change. It's a cross-genre of science fiction and urban-fantasy
- An area you'd like to improve in: A writer never stops learning and improving so I would say pretty much all areas, but the most urgent is plot development and transitioning from one point to another smoothly. A balance of action and drama.
- An accomplishment you're proud of: I finished my first YA novel during Nanowrimo. It's the first novel I've actually finished even though it's only 55, 000 words (I am working/editing to get it to at least 80, 000).

Other

- Hobbies: Writing, Reading, Art (Painting, sketching), Photo Manipulations, Manga
- What's in your journal? A collection of things, original short stories, fanfiction prompts, articles I find interesting and daily ramblings although my original writing and daily ramblings are locked. Everything else is publicly viewed.
- Why did you move to DW? I got sick of Livejournal and its constant changes but mostly because I am not a fan of large blinking banner ads. I was also looking for a new start anyway so I would say largely 90% of it was starting over.
- Favorite energy drink? I don't drink them.
- Anything else? I am very open to meeting new people, although I might not grant access to the locked entries straight away until I've gotten to know you for a bit first due to the nature of the writing I have behind closed doors. I've been burned recently by someone so I am a little more cautious these days.

- Your favorite book/s: Lord of the Rings, Swordspoint, Tam Lin, Memory and Dream
- Your favorite character/s: Almost every elf, Alec from Swordspoint
- Least favorite book/s: Eh, I don't hate any book enough to call it my least favorite. I'm not too fond of the 19th century realists, if that helps.
- Least favorite characters: Um. No character comes to mind.
- Recommended reading: Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner is good on so many levels. I can't recommend it enough.

Writing

- What do you write: (ex: fiction, poems, songs, etc.) Mostly fanfiction
- Your favorite genre/s to write: Fantasy and urban fantasy (bet you didn't see that one coming.)
- Do you write fanfiction? (if yes, what fandom?)Yes, in Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion, also Bordertown and Wraeththu.
- Do you write original fiction? Not lately
- Current project: Just trying to finish a story, any story. I have three in the works.
- An area you'd like to improve in: I would love to actually finish a story. I don't know how to write without editing obsessively. I need a better brain.
- An accomplishment you're proud of: I finished a story once, and I still don't hate it. That's a pretty big accomplishment in my book.

Other

- Hobbies: Reading and writing--big surprise, huh?-- though I do go through drawing stages every once in a while.
- What's in your journal? Not very much so far. Eventually I hope to collect all my thoughts about writing into one place, which will probably be extremely boring to anyone who tries to read it. My day to day rambles and fandom squee will stay on livejournal for now. My friends over there seem pretty resistant to the mass exodus, and I'm too lazy to keep up with crossposting.
- Why did you move to DW?Like I said, I didn't really move. I'm using my DW journal as a place to write down stuff that would bore or alarm my f-list on livejournal.
- Favorite energy drink?Dr. Pepper

- Least favorite characters: Bella from Twilight.
- Recommended reading: Any of those listed in my favorites. I'd also recommend anything by Alex Sanchez. I highly recommend the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. They might be YA but the pwn most other YA book series.

Writing

- What do you write: (ex: fiction, poems, songs, etc.) Fiction, though I dabble in poetry from time to time.
- Your favorite genre/s to write: Fiction.
- Do you write fanfiction? (if yes, what fandom?) From time to time, mostly Buffy and dabble with the fandoms I like (like Chuck, Charmed, Doctor Who, Alias). It really just depends on how I'm feeling.
- Do you write original fiction? Yes. I want to write more of it, so it's my goal to start steering away from the safety of fanfic.
- Current project: Picking something and sticking with it. I tend to start things and then abandon them.
- An area you'd like to improve in: Re: See above. Also, construct a mystery and follow through with it.
- An accomplishment you're proud of: Graduating and living to tell about it.

Other

- Hobbies: writing, music, movies, graphics
- What's in your journal? ramblings and musings about RL & Fandom. I have a separate community for my art stuff.
- Why did you move to DW? Because I think dreamwidth is nifty.
- Favorite energy drink? I down coke like nobody's business. I've determined it's an addiction. So, I'm going to stop drinking from now on. Well, some time soon. Might start next week. >.> Yeah.
- Anything else? I like to write to music. I think because I'm so influenced by TV (Hi Joss, how are you?) and scores, that I feel like my story needs a strong sound track. So, I'm the weirdo who creates a playlist for the mood of his fiction. I know, I'm a freak, but I really love it. Sometimes it works in reverse, and I collect songs as I write, and that helps me figure out the story or the characters.

Not that much of a freak. I know lots of people who write to music. I do it myself on occasion too. Sometimes, if I'm stuck with a scene, playing a song that captures the book I'm trying to capture is just what I need to give me that extra push.

- Do you write original fiction? Yes, yes I do.
- Current project: Bones, a YA paranormal about a dying girl, a ghost boy and a decades-old murder.
- An area you'd like to improve in: I'd like to strengthen my third-person writing. I've written first for so long that it's much easier to write. I can just let my character "talk", while in third-person I actually have to do the work.
- An accomplishment you're proud of: I have one completed novel (currently in editing before I start querying agents). Writing 80 000 words for one thing is a huge accomplishment for me.
